I hadn’t realized I had fallen asleep and when I woke up, the room was dark. I blinked, wondering why I felt so tired. Then I recalled everything that had happened. A fresh wave of pain hit me. Jenna was gone too! I panicked, realizing I had been left alone.

I flung open my bedroom door and there I saw Jenna, fixing dinner, wearing one of my house shirts.

“Hey,” she began with a small smile.

“What are you still-“

“Made a salad and some beans.”

“I thought you left.”

Jenna didn’t look at me as she put plates on the dining table. “Why would I?”

I said nothing as she poured orange juice in a glass for me. Then she poured the remaining in her glass.

We ate dinner in silence; the utensils tinkered against each other. I guess we were both lost in thought, ashamed at the revelation, wondering what to do next.

I looked at Jenna. “Why did you resign? When?”

“Last week.”

“Why?”

“I couldn’t stand doing that to Tim. Or you. Then today happened.”

I nodded and we fell into silence again. We finished dinner and I cleaned up as Jenna sat on the couch, skimming over television channels. As soon I was done, I plopped right next to her. The air was still heavy with negativity, even if we were both together again, in good terms. And I was finally free from the prospect of being Mrs. Timothy Smith until I died or divorced him under unpleasant circumstances.

“What happens now, Les?” she asked me without looking at me.

I shrugged and put my head on her shoulder. “I don’t know.”

“You know you have to break this to your family. You’ve just cancelled your wedding.”

“I’ve cancelled my whole relationship with Tim.”

She shifted and I looked at her.

“I meant that much to you?” she asked in a soft voice.

I nodded. “Yes.”

“When will you tell your mom?”

“Now,” I said, picking up my phone. It was seven-thirty in the evening; my parents’ routine was to be in the study after dinner, my dad would read or watch news, my mom would be burying her nose in a book.

I took a breath.

“Hey, mom.”

“Hi, sweetie.”

Her voice sounded strained. I had a feeling she knew.

“Is there something you want to tell me?” she asked.

I felt my hands shake a little and I went cold. I took a deep breath. This was harder than I thought. But the worst should have been over, right? With Tim?

“Mom,” my voice cracked, “I can’t- I can’t go through with the wedding.”

She was silent on the other end, but I heard her breathing. I then heard her sigh.

“What happened?”

“It’s a long story, mom.”

“Tim called me earlier, told me that the wedding was off…”

So she knew. Tim called her. I wondered what Tim said.

“He did?” and I said nothing else.

“I’m going there. Now.”

“Mom-“

She cut me off. I looked at Jenna with fear in my eyes.

“Do you want me to stay?” she asked me.

I nodded. “Please.”

It took my mother twenty minutes to get to my apartment. Her face was stressed as I opened the door.
